House Passes Bill to Lower Age for Charging Juvenile Suspects as Adults in Washington, D.C.

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation aimed at changing how serious crimes committed by young offenders are prosecuted in Washington, D.C. The measure would lower the age at which certain suspects can be charged as adults.

The proposal is tied to the D.C. Criminal Reforms to Immediately Make Everyone Safer (CRIMES) Act, which seeks to address concerns about violent crime in the nation’s capital. One of the central provisions would reduce the maximum age for individuals to be prosecuted as juveniles, lowering it from 24 to 18 years old.
