My Dad Hid Gifts for 36 Years—After His Funeral, I Looked Under His Bed and Found the Truth About Mom

PART ONE — THE KEY WITH NO NAME
I read the first sentence five times, as if repeating it might turn it into something harmless.
My name is Nora Whitcomb, and until that afternoon I had believed my mother, Elise, died in a highway collision when I was six.
Dad had told me the driver of another car crossed the center line on a rainy night.
There had been a funeral, a photograph of Mom on the mantel, and a little girl who asked the same question every evening.
Why didn't she come home?
Dad always answered with the same aching honesty, or what I thought was honesty.
“Sometimes terrible things happen, Pumpkin, and nobody deserves them.”
Now his letter shook in my hands.
“Your mother did die when you were six, but not in the way I allowed you to believe.”
I heard the refrigerator hum in the kitchen and a car roll over the cracked pavement outside.
The world was carrying on while mine came apart.
“I lied about the accident because I was afraid that telling you the truth would make you carry a burden no child should carry.”
I pressed the paper against my knee to keep it steady.
“Before you decide whether you can forgive me, go to the address attached to the brass key. Ask for Mrs. Bell. Tell her that Daniel finally sent you.”
There was more, but the next line had been crossed out so heavily I could barely see the indentations.
The letter ended with the words I knew by heart.
“I love you more than all the stars.”
I stared at the small key.
Its paper tag read 14 Orchard Lane, Fairhaven.
Fairhaven was a lakeside town two hours from our home in Cedar Glen, Pennsylvania.
I had never heard Dad mention it.
Inside the box were dozens of envelopes tied with green ribbon, a stack of photographs, and a child's yellow mitten.
The mitten was mine.
I remembered losing it during a winter when the snowbanks reached our porch steps.
Dad had bought me a replacement pair from a thrift shop and pretended the mismatched colors were a fashion statement.
I smiled despite myself.
Then I lifted the photographs.
The first showed Mom on a porch with a woman whose face I didn't recognize.
They were laughing, both holding mugs, their shoulders pressed together.
On the back, in Mom's handwriting, were the words “Elise and Ruth, August 1989.”
The next picture showed Dad standing outside a little blue house, his arm around Mom, with a young man beside them.
Someone had drawn a circle around the man's face in red ink.
The circle was old and faded.
There was no explanation.
At the bottom of the box, beneath a folded quilt square, lay a sealed envelope marked FOR YOUR CHILDREN.
I did not open it.
Not yet.
I called my husband, Caleb, who was at our daughter Mae's soccer practice.
He answered on the second ring.
“Did you find anything worth keeping?”
I tried to speak and failed.
“Nora?”
“Dad left me a letter.”
There was a pause.
“What kind of letter?”
“The kind that says everything I know about Mom might be wrong.”
Caleb didn't ask me to explain over the phone.
He said he would take Mae and our son, Oliver, home, make dinner, and wait until I was ready.
“Whatever you find,” he said, “you don't have to face it alone.”
I sat there for a long time after the call.
For most of my life, I had understood Dad as the man who stayed.
He worked nights repairing school buses, packed my lunches in brown paper bags, and learned to braid hair by practicing on the fringe of an old scarf.
When I was ten, I wanted to attend a school field trip we couldn't afford.
The next morning, I found an envelope hidden inside my dictionary.
Inside were twenty dollars and a note that said, “Treasure hunters should see the world.”
I learned years later he had sold his fishing rod to pay for it.
The idea that he could lie to me seemed impossible.
The evidence in my hands made it unavoidable.
I put the photographs and letters back into the box and carried it to my car.
At home, I told Caleb everything.
He read the letter without interrupting.
“Maybe the accident was a cover for something worse,” he said carefully.
“Or maybe Mom did something Dad didn't want me to know.”
“Either way, the woman in Fairhaven might have answers.”
I slept badly that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the red circle around the stranger's face.
In one dream, Dad stood at the end of a hallway, calling me to follow him, but every door opened onto another door.
At dawn, I made coffee and looked at the brass key in the light.
The teeth were worn smooth from years of use.
Someone had held on to it for a very long time.
I told the children I was visiting an old friend of Grandpa's.
Mae asked whether the friend knew any treasure hunts.
“I think she might,” I answered.
Caleb offered to drive.
I wanted him with me, but the letter had addressed only me.
“I need to hear it first,” I said.
He understood.
Before I left, he slipped a packet of my favorite peppermint candies into the glove compartment.
“Your dad would have done it,” he said.
I cried for the first time since opening the box.
Fairhaven sat beside a narrow lake, with weathered storefronts and maples beginning to turn orange.
Orchard Lane was quieter than the main road, lined with houses whose porches had sagged gently with age.
Number fourteen was a blue cottage with white shutters.
It was the same house from the photograph.
I parked across the street and stared at the front door.
On the porch stood an elderly woman watering a row of flowers.
She saw me, set down the watering can, and gripped the railing.
“Nora?” she called.
I stepped out of the car.
“I was told to ask for Mrs. Bell.”
She covered her mouth with one hand.
“Oh, Daniel,” she whispered.
Then she looked at me with eyes full of recognition.
“You have your mother's face.”
I remembered one summer when our electricity went out during a storm.
Dad placed candles in jelly jars and drew a treasure map on the back of an overdue bill.
We hunted for a flashlight, a deck of cards, and a jar of peanut butter.
At the time, I thought it was the best evening of my life.
Only later did I understand he had been distracting me from the fact that he couldn't afford the repair immediately.
He had never asked me to admire his sacrifices.
He had simply made them and moved on.
That memory made the secret harder, not easier, to understand.
If he could tell me we were struggling with money, why couldn't he tell me the truth about Mom?
I realized the answer might not have been about protecting me alone.
Maybe he had also been protecting himself from having to speak aloud the worst night of his life.
That possibility did not excuse him.
It did make him human.

PART TWO — THE WOMAN AT ORCHARD LANE
Ruth Bell invited me inside before I could decide whether I trusted her.
Her house smelled of lemon soap, old books, and something baking in the oven.
Photographs covered a sideboard near the dining room.
I saw my mother in three of them.
In one, she was holding a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.
Me.
Ruth followed my gaze.
“She brought you here whenever she could,” she said.
“Why didn't I remember?”
“You were very little, and your father kept you away after everything happened.”
She said it without accusation, but I felt the weight of those words.
I placed the brass key on her table.
“Dad told me to give you this.”
Ruth didn't touch it immediately.
“He carried that key on his ring for thirty-six years,” she said.
“It opens the cabinet in the spare room.”
“What's in the cabinet?”
“The part of the story I promised I would never tell unless Daniel gave permission.”
I wanted to shout that he had no right to make promises on my behalf.
Instead I asked her to start at the beginning.
Ruth folded her hands.
“Your mother was a school counselor. She loved children who didn't have anyone listening to them.”
I knew Mom had worked at a school, but Dad rarely spoke about the details.
“She also volunteered at a family shelter,” Ruth continued.
“Back then, the shelter was run by a charitable foundation with a very respectable board.”
I looked at the photograph of the man with the red circle.
Ruth recognized it immediately.
“Martin Vale,” she said.
“He chaired the foundation.”
“Why is his face circled?”
“Because your mother learned he was stealing money meant for families who needed housing.”
Ruth explained that Elise had found discrepancies in the shelter's emergency assistance accounts.
Families were being told that grants had run out, yet the books showed payments to companies that didn't exist.
Elise copied records and took them to an attorney.
She thought exposing the theft would protect the shelter.
“Martin was powerful,” Ruth said.
“He had friends at the bank, in local government, and on the board.”
“Did he threaten her?”
Ruth nodded.
“First he threatened her job. Then he threatened to make you and Daniel disappear from the town.”
I felt sick.
“Why didn't Dad tell the police?”
“He did. Your mother did too. But the first officer they spoke with dismissed it as a bookkeeping dispute.”
Ruth went to the window, as though the next part was easier to say while looking away.
“Then a fire started at the shelter's records building.”
I knew the story of the fire.
Dad had once said Mom died in a car accident on the way home from a late shift.
“Your mother went inside because she believed a teenage volunteer was still there,” Ruth said.
“She got the girl out through a side door.”
I could barely breathe.
“And Mom?”
“She suffered terrible smoke injuries. She died at the hospital two days later.”
The room went quiet.
My mother hadn't died in a collision.
She had died saving someone.
“Why would Dad hide that?” I whispered.
Ruth's face tightened.
“Because the official report called it an electrical accident. Your father believed it was set deliberately, and he believed the people responsible were watching you.”
I remembered a childhood of locked doors, carefully planned routes home, and Dad insisting that I never accept rides from strangers.
I had thought he was simply protective.
“He wanted you to have a childhood that wasn't shaped by fear,” Ruth said.
“Sometimes he made the wrong choices trying to give you that.”
I held on to the table edge.
“Was Martin ever charged?”
“No. The foundation closed, the accounts were transferred, and the case went cold.”
“Then why send me here now?”
Ruth picked up the key.
“Because something changed last winter.”
She led me down a short hallway to a spare room where a metal cabinet stood beside a sewing machine.
The key turned with a stiff click.
Inside were folders, a cassette recorder, and a small tin filled with paper stars.
The sight of those stars made my knees weaken.
Dad used to fold stars from scraps of colored paper and hide them in my lunchbox.
One star for every day he worked a double shift.
When I complained that I missed him, he told me each star was a promise that he was thinking of me.
Ruth handed me a folder marked ELISE.
It contained copies of grant applications, bank transfers, and letters written by families denied assistance.
There were dates, signatures, and names.
I wasn't an investigator, but even I could see that the same companies received payment after payment.
Ruth showed me an article printed only nine months earlier.
Martin Vale had died, leaving behind a charitable trust and a public reputation for generosity.
His daughter, Celia Vale, had recently announced a plan to reopen the old shelter site as a luxury development.
“Daniel saw the article,” Ruth said.
“He called me that night.”
“What did he say?”
“He said he couldn't bear the thought of the truth being buried under another building.”
Ruth took a breath.
“He was going to tell you everything. Then he got sick.”
I thought of Dad struggling to lift his coffee cup.
Of the way he watched me when he thought I wasn't looking.
“Why didn't he tell me while he still could?”
“He was ashamed of the lie,” Ruth said.
“He kept waiting for a moment when telling you wouldn't hurt so much.”
I laughed once, a broken sound.
“That moment was never going to come.”
“No,” she agreed.
From the tin, Ruth took a folded paper star and placed it in my palm.
“This one is different.”
I opened it carefully.
Inside, in my mother's handwriting, were the words, “For Nora, when she's old enough to ask hard questions.”
My throat closed.
Ruth opened a drawer and brought out a cassette tape.
“Your mother recorded this for you a week before the fire.”
I stared at the tape as if it were alive.
“Did Dad know?”
“He listened once,” Ruth said.
“He couldn't bring himself to play it for you.”
I wanted to be furious with him.
I was furious with him.
But the tape lay in my hands, carrying a voice I had not heard since I was six.
“May I listen?” I asked.
Ruth nodded and left me alone in the room.
I pushed the cassette into the old recorder.
There was a hiss, then a click.
And then my mother said my name.
Ruth brought out a recipe card written in Mom's neat blue ink.
It was for cinnamon toast, the kind Dad made whenever I was sick.
I had always believed he invented the recipe himself.
“He burned it the first time he tried,” Ruth said with a small smile.
“Elise teased him for a week.”
I traced the flour-smudged corner of the card.
There were so many ordinary details no one had thought to preserve for me.
What music had she played while washing dishes?
Did she sing off-key?
Did she ever lose her temper when the car wouldn't start?
Ruth answered each question patiently.
She told me Mom loved old jazz records and hated folding fitted sheets.
She said Mom laughed with her entire face and kept a jar of coins for children who needed bus fare.
For the first time, grief felt less like a hole and more like a room with windows opening.

PART THREE — THE VOICE I HAD FORGOTTEN
“Nora, my brave little Pumpkin.”
Her voice was softer than I remembered, with a laugh tucked into the edges of the words.
I pressed both hands over my mouth.
“I don't know when you'll hear this,” she continued, “and I hope it will be years from now, when you're old enough to understand why grown-ups sometimes get frightened.”
She paused, and I heard the distant sound of a kettle.
“You are six today. You asked me whether courage means never being afraid.”
I remembered the question suddenly.
We had been sitting on the kitchen floor, decorating cupcakes with too much pink icing.
Mom had wiped frosting from my nose.
“I told you courage is doing the kind thing even when your knees are shaking.”
I began to cry.
“I want you to know that you were loved before you could speak, and you will be loved even when I'm not standing beside you.”
There was a long pause.
“Your dad is a good man. He worries about everything, especially you. If he seems strict sometimes, remember that his heart is trying to keep you safe.”
I thought of the decades of tiny gifts.
The notes and sweets and ridiculous treasure hunts.
He had been building a world where safety arrived wrapped in playfulness.
Mom's voice returned.
“There are people who have been hurt because someone with power forgot they mattered. I'm trying to help them. If that makes things difficult for our family, I want you to know that helping people is never something to be ashamed of.”
The tape clicked off.
I sat in the quiet spare room with tears soaking the front of my shirt.
For thirty-six years, I had missed my mother's voice without remembering exactly what it sounded like.
Now I had it again.
When Ruth returned, she sat beside me without speaking.
At last I asked, “Who was the girl Mom saved?”
Ruth looked surprised.
“Her name was Hannah Price. She was fifteen.”
“Is she alive?”
“Yes. She's a social worker in Philadelphia.”
“Does she know what happened?”
“She knows your mother saved her. She doesn't know everything your mother discovered.”
I looked at the folders.
“Then she deserves to know too.”
Ruth told me Daniel had asked her to hold the evidence until I could decide what to do with it.
“He didn't want to leave you an obligation,” she said.
“He wanted to leave you a choice.”
That afternoon I called Caleb from Ruth's porch.
He listened as I told him about the fire, the tape, and the woman who had survived.
“Do you want me to come?” he asked.
“Yes,” I said.
It was the first time that day I allowed myself to need him.
He arrived with the children before sunset.
Mae ran toward me and stopped when she saw my face.
“Mom, are you sad?”
“Very,” I said.
She hugged my waist.
“Can we help?”
I looked at her and thought about what it meant to inherit a secret.
“Yes,” I said. “You can stay close.”
Ruth served soup and bread at her kitchen table.
The children were fascinated by the photographs of their grandmother.
Oliver said she had my eyebrows.
Mae insisted she had my smile.
I couldn't tell which was true, but I was grateful for both observations.
After dinner, Caleb helped me organize the documents by date.
He worked as a high school librarian and had a gift for making order out of chaos.
We found a letter from Mom to a lawyer, dated three days before the fire.
She wrote that Martin Vale had threatened her, and she feared evidence was being removed from the foundation's offices.
There was also a photocopy of a bank statement showing a transfer to a company called Orchard Management.
Ruth recognized the name.
“It was owned by Martin's brother,” she said.
That gave us a clear trail, but not proof of who started the fire.
I was careful not to turn my mother's death into a mystery with an easy villain.
She deserved truth, not guesses.
The next morning I called Hannah Price.
When I introduced myself, she went silent.
“Elise's daughter?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“I've wanted to find you for years.”
We met at a public library halfway between our homes.
Hannah was now in her fifties, with kind eyes and a tired face.
She brought a photograph of herself at fifteen, standing beside my mother in the shelter garden.
“I owe your mother my life,” she said.
She told me how the fire alarm failed to sound and smoke filled the hallway.
Elise had found her searching for a younger child who had already escaped.
“She covered my face with her sweater,” Hannah said.
“She told me to crawl toward the light.”
“Did she get out?”
“She got me through the side door. Then she went back because she thought someone else was inside.”
Hannah swallowed.
“By the time the firefighters reached her, she'd collapsed.”
I stared at the table.
For years I had imagined a sudden crash on a rainy road.
The truth was slower and crueler, but it held a courage I had never been allowed to know.
Hannah reached across the table.
“Your mother wasn't reckless,” she said.
“She was trying to make sure nobody was left behind.”
I asked whether she remembered anything strange before the fire.
She thought for a long time.
“A maintenance van was parked behind the building,” she said.
“I remember because the driver argued with a man in a dark coat.”
“Do you remember their faces?”
“No. It was dark.”
Her honesty mattered.
I wrote down exactly what she recalled and nothing more.
Hannah then surprised me with a folded envelope.
“Your father sent me a Christmas card every year,” she said.
“He never asked me to contact you. He just wanted me to know someone remembered.”
Inside were photocopies of cards in Dad's careful handwriting.
One read, “I hope the life Elise helped save is a good one.”
I cried again.
He had hidden this grief in the same quiet place he hid our Christmas presents.
Before leaving, Hannah asked whether she could help make the story public.
“I think it's time,” I said.
That evening, a message appeared in my email inbox from an address I didn't recognize.
The subject line read: STOP DIGGING INTO THE VALE FOUNDATION.
The body contained one sentence.
“Your father knew what happened, and he chose silence for a reason.”
I stared at it, then forwarded it to Caleb and the attorney whose name appeared in Mom's papers.
For the first time, I understood why Dad had been afraid.
But I also understood something he had not been able to teach me.
A secret can protect a child for a while and still become a prison when that child grows up.
I wasn't six anymore.
Hannah told me she had spent years feeling guilty that she survived while my mother did not.
“I used to think I had stolen time that belonged to her,” she admitted.
I reached for her hand.
“You were a child,” I said.
“She chose to help you. You didn't take anything from her.”
Hannah began to cry, and I understood that our family had not been the only one living with the aftermath of that fire.
She showed me photographs of her grown children and a grandson missing his front teeth.
“I tell them about Elise,” she said.
“I tell them that people can change the direction of a life without ever knowing it.”
I asked whether she would like to meet my children one day.
Her answer came before I finished the question.
“I would love that.”

PART FOUR — THE LAST TREASURE HUNT
The attorney, Miriam Shaw, had retired from active practice but remembered my mother immediately.
“Elise brought me records nobody wanted to examine,” she said when we met.
“She was careful, determined, and terribly worried about the families who had lost their assistance.”
Miriam confirmed that Mom had filed a complaint with state investigators before the fire.
The complaint had been closed without charges after records were destroyed.
“Some of the money was never accounted for,” she said.
“Does that mean Martin Vale set the fire?” I asked.
“No,” Miriam answered firmly.
“It means there were unanswered questions. We should not confuse suspicion with proof.”
I was grateful she refused to offer me a simple answer.
She helped us make copies of the documents and submit them to the state attorney general's office for review.
We also reported the threatening email.
A detective took the report, advised us to preserve every message, and told us not to confront anyone connected to the old foundation.
For the first time in days, I felt I was doing something Dad would recognize as sensible.
Then Celia Vale called me.
She introduced herself politely and said she had heard I was asking questions about her father's charity.
“I understand this is emotional,” she said.
“My father was respected in this town. I hope you won't repeat unverified accusations.”
I gripped the phone.
“My mother died in a fire at that charity,” I replied.
“I know, and I'm sorry.”
“Then you understand why I want the records examined.”
She paused.
“I don't want an ugly public fight.”
“Neither do I. I want the truth.”
I ended the call without agreeing to anything.
Weeks passed.
The investigation moved slowly, and I learned to live with uncertainty.
An investigator confirmed receiving the old financial records but made no promises about what they would establish.
A local newspaper published a careful account of the shelter, the missing funds, and my mother's rescue of Hannah.
The article named no arson suspect.
It focused on the families who had been denied help and on the woman who had saved a child.
When the story appeared, letters began arriving.
One woman remembered Mom bringing groceries to her apartment after a grant was refused.
A man recalled Dad repairing the shelter's broken heater for free.
Another family sent a photograph of Elise kneeling beside three children at a Christmas party.
I spread the letters across our dining room table.
For the first time, I could see my mother as a whole person, not just the beautiful photograph Dad kept on the mantel.
She had been funny, stubborn, impatient with unfairness, and generous with her time.
I had spent thirty-six years thinking of her as someone taken away.
Now I was meeting the person she had been before that loss.
One evening, I returned to Dad's house alone.
I sat on his worn sofa and opened the envelope marked FOR YOUR CHILDREN.
Inside were two letters, one for Mae and one for Oliver.
Each began with a different memory.
For Mae, Dad wrote about the afternoon she taught him to make paper flowers and insisted he wear one behind his ear.
For Oliver, he remembered the day they built a cardboard rocket in the garage and pretended to visit Saturn.
Both letters ended the same way.
“Whenever you find a small kindness, remember that love is still looking for you.”
I pressed the letters to my chest.
At the bottom of the envelope lay one more note, addressed to me.
“Pumpkin, I know you're angry, and you have every right to be.”
My breath caught.
“I told myself the accident story because I was frightened someone would hurt you if they knew what Elise had uncovered. Later I told myself I would explain when you were older. But each year you were happy, and each year I was afraid of breaking that happiness.”
The handwriting grew shakier.
“I was wrong to make that choice for you. Love doesn't excuse dishonesty. I hope one day you can understand my fear without having to forgive my mistake.”
I read that sentence twice.
He wasn't asking me to pretend he had done nothing wrong.
He was trusting me to decide what his mistake meant.
The note continued.
“Your mother and I used to hide little gifts for each other when we were first married. After she died, I kept doing it because it made the house feel less empty. You thought the treasure hunts were for you, but the truth is they helped me survive too.”
I laughed through my tears.
Of course they had.
I remembered Dad pretending to be surprised whenever I discovered a chocolate in my boot.
The delight on his face had always been real.
“There's one last thing,” the note said.
“Check the pocket of the old green coat in the hallway closet. And please, don't forget to eat something.”
I shook my head, smiling helplessly.
Even now he was trying to feed me.
The green coat hung behind a row of jackets.
In its pocket was a small cloth pouch and a folded note.
The pouch held two simple silver rings, each engraved with a tiny star.
One had belonged to Mom.
The other was Dad's wedding ring, which he'd stopped wearing when his hands became swollen.
The note said, “One for you. One for the person you love. No treasure is worth much unless you share it.”
I slipped Mom's ring onto a chain around my neck.
I carried Dad's home to Caleb.
We sat at the kitchen table after the children went to bed, and I told him I was still angry.
“You can be angry and love him,” Caleb said.
“Those things don't cancel each other out.”
I realized that was what Dad's final gift had given me.
Not a perfect explanation.
Permission to hold two truths at once.
He had been the father who stayed up all night sewing a torn costume for my school play.
He had also been the father who kept a painful truth from me for most of my life.
Both were real.
That winter, Fairhaven's town council approved a memorial garden near the old shelter site after local residents organized a petition.
The garden honored volunteers and families who had supported the shelter, including my mother.
Celia Vale attended the dedication quietly.
She approached me afterward and said she had authorized the release of the foundation's surviving archives to investigators.
“I found things I wish my father had explained,” she admitted.
I didn't ask her to say more in front of the crowd.
We both knew the inquiry had to run its course.
No one was charged in connection with the fire, and I refused to invent certainty where there was none.
But a later financial review confirmed that the old foundation had diverted assistance money through related companies.
A restitution fund was created from remaining charitable assets after negotiations and legal review.
It couldn't restore my mother or erase the suffering of the families who had been turned away.
It was still something real.
At the dedication, Hannah stood beside me and told the gathering about the woman who guided her through the smoke.
Then Mae stepped forward with a paper star she'd folded herself.
She placed it beneath my mother's photograph.
“Grandma Elise helped people,” she said simply.
I put my arm around her.
“Yes,” I whispered. “She did.”
On the first anniversary of Dad's death, I invited Ruth and Hannah to our house for Sunday dinner.
Caleb made roast chicken, and the children set the table with the mismatched plates Dad had given us when we first married.
Before dessert, I hid four tiny packages around the living room.
One behind a cushion.
One inside a slipper.
One beneath the fruit bowl.
And one tucked into the pocket of Caleb's coat.
Mae found hers first and shouted with delight.
Oliver followed a trail of paper stars to a small wooden puzzle.
Ruth discovered a packet of tea she loved.
Hannah opened a little frame holding a copy of her photograph with Mom.
They all looked at me.
I felt tears gather, but I was smiling.
“Another treasure hunt,” I said.
Later, after everyone left, I went into the kitchen and found a peppermint candy resting beside my coffee mug.
Caleb leaned in the doorway, pretending to look innocent.
“Did you put this here?” I asked.
“Maybe the house has a ghost who likes candy.”
I laughed so hard I had to sit down.
Then I unwrapped the candy and thought about a six-year-old girl who had believed love might disappear without warning.
Dad had spent a lifetime proving that love could still arrive in small, ordinary ways.
He had not been perfect.
Neither had the story he told me.
But the last treasure hunt led me back to my mother's courage, my father's fear, and the people who had carried their memories when I could not.
I kept the brass key on a chain beside Mom's ring.
Not because it opened a cabinet anymore.
Because it reminded me that doors can open even after the person who held the key is gone.
And every morning, before Mae and Oliver left for school, I slipped a tiny note into one of their pockets.
“Love you more than all the stars.”
Some treasures are meant to be found.
Others are meant to be passed on.
A month after the memorial, I took Mae and Oliver to Dad's empty house one last time before we sold it.
We stood in the doorway of my childhood bedroom, where faint stars still glowed on the ceiling when the lights went out.
Dad had stuck them there the winter I was afraid of sleeping alone.
Mae asked whether Grandpa had put them up for me.
“He did,” I said.
“Were you scared?”
“Sometimes.”
“Did the stars help?”
I looked at the little plastic shapes, yellowed with age.
“Yes,” I said. “They really did.”
We peeled down one star each and placed them carefully in a small envelope.
The rest we left for the next family, hoping another child might find comfort in their glow.
