My Husband Flew First Class to Cancún With His Mistress—Then His Wife Welcomed Him Aboard

PART 1 — THE SEAT ASSIGNMENT

The first thing I did was pick up Graham's sunglasses.
I bent, retrieved them from the carpet, and handed them back as though he were any other passenger who had dropped something at the boarding door.
“Your seats are on the left,” I said.
Sienna stared at me with a puzzled smile.
“Do you two know each other?”
Graham opened his mouth, but no words came.
“Yes,” I answered.
“We've met.”
That was all.
I stepped aside so the line could move again.
A woman behind them thanked me for keeping boarding organized, and I thanked her right back.
The ordinary exchange seemed to offend Graham more than a public accusation would have.
He wanted a scene he could blame on me.
Instead, I gave him nothing he could use.
Sienna followed him into the cabin, still studying my face.
I watched them settle into seats 2A and 2B.
He put his carry-on in the overhead compartment without looking at me.
She took out her phone and photographed the champagne waiting on their tray tables.
A gold bracelet flashed at her wrist.
I recognized it immediately.
Three weeks earlier, Graham had told me that bracelet was a retirement gift for a senior project manager.
I had believed him for approximately eleven seconds.
Then I had seen the receipt.
It was addressed to a woman whose name appeared on a travel invoice buried inside his company's expense report.
Sienna Blake.
I had not confronted him then.
I had learned long ago that Graham became most dangerous when he thought he had lost control of a conversation.
He could turn a simple question into an accusation, a reasonable concern into an argument about my job, and a broken promise into evidence that I was too demanding.
So I stopped arguing and started listening.
My colleague, Priya, leaned close as I checked the forward galley.
“Are you all right?” she asked.
“I'm all right to work,” I said.
She followed my gaze toward row two.
“Is that him?”
I nodded once.
Priya knew my husband by sight.
She had also been the person who sat with me in an airport coffee shop the night I discovered his first lie.
“Do you want me to take first class?” she asked.
I considered it.
“No,” I said.
“I'll handle the service, but if I need a break, I'll tell you.”
She squeezed my shoulder.
“Just say the word.”
Before departure, the captain called the cabin crew for our briefing.
We reviewed the flight time, weather, passenger needs, and our safety responsibilities.
I listened carefully.
No matter what Graham had done, there were passengers depending on me.
I would not let him turn their flight into a theater for his mistakes.
Once the door closed and the aircraft began to taxi, I took my jump seat and fastened my harness.
Across the aisle, Graham stared straight ahead.
Sienna leaned toward him and whispered something I couldn't hear.
He shook his head sharply.
She withdrew, hurt and confused.
For a brief moment I almost pitied her.
Then I remembered that she had been posting photographs of vacations taken on dates when Graham claimed to be working through emergencies.
She knew he was married.
What she did not know was how many of his stories were lies told to both of us.
The plane climbed above Dallas, and the city disappeared beneath a blanket of cloud.
When the seat-belt sign went off, Priya and I began service.
I offered the first row drinks, then turned to Graham and Sienna.
“May I get you something?”
Sienna lifted her chin.
“Champagne, please.”
Graham said, “Water.”
“Still or sparkling?” I asked.
He stared at me.
“Still.”
I placed a glass in front of him.
My hand did not shake.
Sienna watched our exchange, then laughed too brightly.
“You have the same name as Graham's wife,” she said.
I glanced at her.
“Do I?”
“Elena,” she continued.
“He says she works for an airline.”
Graham closed his eyes.
I set down her champagne.
“Then perhaps you should ask him whether there's anything else you have in common with his wife.”
I moved on before either could answer.
At the galley, Priya raised her eyebrows.
“That was restrained,” she said.
“I'm practicing.”
She handed me a tray of meals.
I smiled, but the smile vanished when I turned away.
I was not enjoying this.
My chest felt hollow, as though someone had taken a spoon to the center of me and scraped out every familiar certainty.
Graham and I had met at a charity race in Fort Worth.
He had been charming without seeming to try.
He remembered the names of waiters, called his mother every Sunday, and listened when I talked about the places I loved.
When we married, he promised that our lives would never become a competition between his ambition and my work.
I believed that promise.
For a while, he seemed to believe it too.
Then his company expanded.
He became vice president of operations at a regional construction firm.
The business trips multiplied.
He began referring to my schedule as inconvenient and my income as decorative.
When I challenged him about a missed anniversary, he said I should be grateful he was building our future.
I stopped telling him how lonely I felt because he had turned loneliness into a personal failing.
Now, at thirty-eight thousand feet, the future he claimed to be building was sitting beside him wearing a gold bracelet.
I served the remaining passengers and returned to the galley.
My phone was off, tucked in my crew bag, but I knew exactly what messages would be waiting when we landed.
My attorney, Marisol Vega, had promised to send a final checklist before the afternoon.
She had been careful about what I could prove and what I merely suspected.
That distinction mattered.
I had no intention of accusing anyone of a crime because my marriage was ending.
But the documents I had gathered raised questions no company could ignore.
Two months earlier, I had found a charge for a private villa in Cancún on a credit-card statement mailed to our home.
Graham had told me the card was only for legitimate business expenses.
The charge was labeled as client hospitality.
I searched the client's name.
The client had canceled its contract six weeks before the reservation.
I photographed the statement and left it where I found it.
Then I checked the dates against Graham's travel calendar, which he had shared with me years earlier and never bothered to revoke.
Three more trips lined up with company-paid luxury stays.
On two, he had claimed to be in a different city altogether.
When I raised the subject with Marisol, she warned me not to access accounts that weren't mine or use my airline job to investigate him.
“Protect yourself,” she said.
“Don't become reckless because he was.”
So I gave her only records I had lawfully received as a joint account holder or found among household documents addressed to me.
She directed me to stop there.
A week later, a former colleague of Graham's called.
Her name was Natalie Brooks, and she had recently resigned from the construction firm.
She said she had been asked to approve an invoice for a consultant who never attended a single meeting.
The invoice listed a marketing company connected to Sienna.
Natalie refused to sign it.
After that, her duties were quietly reduced.
She had copies of emails she was authorized to retain and was considering a formal report.
I told her she should speak to her own attorney.
She did.
That morning, before I reported for duty, Natalie had authorized her lawyer to deliver the documents to the firm's independent compliance director.
The process was already moving.
Graham knew none of it.
He had boarded the flight believing the only risk was being recognized by a stranger.
Halfway through lunch service, he pressed his call button.
I approached with my notepad.
“Can I help you?”
“Could we speak privately?” he asked.
“I'm working.”
“Five minutes.”
“Not while I'm responsible for passengers.”
Sienna looked from him to me.
“Graham, what is happening?”
He ignored her.
“Elena, please.”
The use of my name changed everything.
Sienna's expression tightened.
“You're Elena?”
“Yes,” I said.
“I'm his wife.”
The words were quiet enough that only the three of us heard them.
Sienna drew back as though the seat had burned her.
Graham reached for my wrist.
I stepped away before he touched me.
“Please remain seated,” I said.
“And don't interfere with the crew.”
I returned to the galley, where Priya was already waiting.
“You need to breathe,” she said.
“I am breathing.”
“Not well.”
She handed me a cup of water.
I drank it slowly.
Then the forward call light flashed again.
I looked toward row two.
Sienna was crying.
Graham was staring at his phone even though it had no signal.
The real journey had only begun.

PART 2 — THE THINGS HE PAID FOR

The confrontation began with a folded napkin.
Sienna had written something on it and handed it to me when I collected her untouched meal.
Did you know about me?
I read the question once, then looked at her.
“Yes,” I said.
“For several weeks.”
Her face crumpled.
“He told me you were separated.”
“We live in the same house.”
“He said you stayed there for appearances.”
“He kissed me goodbye this morning.”
She pressed her hands over her mouth.
Graham whispered, “Elena, stop.”
I met his eyes.
“You're welcome to explain your version after we land.”
Then I took the tray away.
I was determined not to let a private dispute interrupt the flight.
I asked Priya to finish service in the forward cabin while I checked the rear galley and helped a family traveling with two small children.
The younger child had spilled juice across her seat.
Her father was embarrassed and apologetic.
I brought towels and a fresh cup, and the little girl solemnly promised to hold it with both hands.
“That's a good plan,” I told her.
Her mother smiled with relief.
The moment reminded me why I loved my job.
People arrived on airplanes carrying fear, excitement, exhaustion, grief, and occasionally secrets.
Most of the time, my work was simply to help them get where they were going safely and with a little dignity.
I had built a career on that ordinary kindness.
Graham had spent years treating it as proof that I lacked ambition.
He never understood that staying calm under pressure was a skill, not surrender.
Near the end of the flight, Priya approached me with a concern.
“Sienna says Graham told her you're unstable,” she said.
I looked up.
“What?”
“He asked whether the crew could keep you away from him because you might make a scene.”
I stared at her.
The maneuver was so familiar that I almost laughed.
At home, he had used the same language whenever I questioned him.
Overreacting.
Emotional.
Unreasonable.
Now he was trying to turn my workplace against me.
“Thank you for telling me,” I said.
“I'll speak to the purser and document what happened.”
Priya nodded.
“Already told her.”
Our purser, Denise, was a woman who had spent twenty-two years flying international routes.
She asked whether I felt able to continue my duties.
I told her I did.
She reassigned the final first-class service to Priya anyway, not as punishment but to keep the cabin calm.
I was grateful.
At the gate in Cancún, I remained with the crew while passengers disembarked.
Graham lingered near the front, clearly hoping to corner me.
Denise stepped between us.
“Sir, you need to continue toward the exit.”
“This is my wife,” he protested.
“Then you can speak with her after she has finished working, if she chooses to speak with you.”
Sienna walked past without looking at him.
She was carrying her own suitcase now.
The change was small, but I noticed.
When the aircraft was empty and our post-flight duties were complete, I checked my phone.
There were eleven messages from Graham.
Most were variations of the same demand.
Call me.
We need to talk.
Don't embarrass me.
One message was different.
Whatever you think you found, you're wrong.
I saved it.
Then I opened Marisol's email.
The subject was simple: Documents received.
Natalie's lawyer had delivered the invoice records to the compliance director and requested that evidence be preserved.
Marisol had also prepared my divorce petition and a request for temporary financial protections concerning our joint assets.
Nothing had been filed secretly against Graham's employer in my name.
The company's investigation belonged to the company.
My marriage belonged to me.
The distinction felt important as I stood in the airport corridor.
I had spent too long allowing Graham to blend everything together so he could tell me that challenging his choices meant threatening his career.
I was no longer accepting that bargain.
My layover was forty-eight hours.
The airline had arranged our crew hotel, and I took the shuttle with Denise and Priya.
Graham had booked a different property, a luxury resort south of the city.
I knew its name because it appeared on the same statement that had first made me suspicious.
For one dangerous moment, I imagined going there and confronting him in the lobby.
Then I put my phone away.
I had already seen enough.
At the crew hotel, I showered, changed into a loose blue dress, and sat on the edge of the bed with the curtains open.
The sea was visible between two buildings.
It should have been beautiful.
Instead, I felt a sudden wave of grief.
I cried for the years I had spent arranging my life around someone who considered my trust an entitlement.
I cried for the birthday dinners I had eaten alone.
I cried for the woman I had been at twenty-nine, standing beside Graham in a courthouse and believing we were starting a partnership.
Then I washed my face and called Marisol.
She answered on the second ring.
“Tell me you're somewhere safe,” she said.
“I'm at my crew hotel.”
“Good.”
“Did Natalie send everything?”
“She did, through counsel.”
“Is it enough?”
“Enough to warrant an independent review,” Marisol said.
“Not enough for either of us to declare what happened before the facts are tested.”
I appreciated her caution.
I had spent months imagining certainty because uncertainty hurt.
But justice built on exaggeration would be another kind of lie.
Marisol explained that the compliance director had acknowledged receipt and placed the relevant expense records under preservation instructions.
The board's audit committee would decide whether outside investigators were needed.
“Does Graham know?” I asked.
“Not from us.”
“He knows I know about Sienna.”
“That is his problem to manage.”
I told her about the flight.
She listened without interrupting.
When I finished, she said, “You were professional. Now don't engage with him alone while emotions are high.”
I agreed.
Then she asked about the house.
Our home in Dallas was jointly owned, though Graham liked to call it his house whenever we argued.
My salary had paid utilities, insurance, repairs, and part of the mortgage for years.
The fact that he earned more did not erase those contributions.
Marisol had already prepared a plan to document our accounts and protect my access to essentials while the divorce proceeded.
She warned me not to empty joint accounts or retaliate financially.
I promised I wouldn't.
I wanted a clean record and a clean exit.
After our call, I walked downstairs for a late lunch.
I had barely ordered when a message arrived from an unfamiliar number.
This is Sienna. I got your number from the emergency contact information Graham left on the resort reservation. I know that was inappropriate. I'm sorry. Can we talk?
I stared at the screen.
The old version of me would have answered immediately, desperate to compare every lie.
Instead, I waited.
Then I wrote: I am not willing to discuss my marriage in person. If you have information about company spending, please speak with an attorney or the company's compliance office.
Her reply came quickly.
I didn't know he was using company money. He said the trips were paid from his bonuses.
I set the phone down.
That was the part I could not stop thinking about.
Graham had not only lied to me about where he went.
He might have been lying to everyone about who was paying.
The next message made me sit straighter.
He told me to delete our travel confirmations this morning. I haven't.
I forwarded the message to Marisol without responding further.
Ten minutes later, my attorney called.
“Do not ask her for the records,” she said.
“Let her obtain independent advice and decide what to disclose through proper channels.”
“I understand.”
“Also, Elena, I need you to know something.”
Her voice changed.
“The company has identified a second set of charges on a corporate card.”
“What kind?”
“Travel and gifts.”
I closed my eyes.
“Another woman?”
“We don't know.”
But I knew what it meant to be offered the same excuse twice.
I looked at the ocean through the restaurant window.
For months, I had imagined the moment Graham's affair would be exposed.
I had thought it would feel like victory.
Instead, I felt the terrible weight of learning how much of our life had been staged.

PART 3 — THE PRICE OF A LIE

Graham called at six that evening.
I did not answer.
He called again at seven.
Then he sent a photograph of the empty dinner table at his resort.
Can we please talk like adults?
I wrote back only after consulting Marisol.
All communication about our separation should go through counsel. Do not contact me at work.
His response was immediate.
You're destroying my reputation over a misunderstanding.
I put the phone face down.
The next morning, I walked along the beach before sunrise.
A fisherman was pushing a small boat into the water, and two children were building a crooked sandcastle near their grandmother.
Their laughter drifted over the waves.
I realized I had been waiting for Graham to apologize in a way that would make the past understandable.
I wanted him to explain how the man who once drove two hours to bring me soup when I was sick had become the man who lied about another woman's bracelet.
But an explanation was not the same thing as accountability.
And I no longer needed him to tell me what I had lived through.
At ten, Marisol called with an update.
The firm's audit committee had engaged outside counsel to review travel and vendor expenses.
Graham had been instructed to preserve communications and records.
He had also been placed on temporary administrative leave while the review proceeded.
“That isn't a finding of wrongdoing,” she emphasized.
“It's a precaution.”
I understood.
Even so, my hands began to tremble.
The consequences were becoming real.
I asked whether Natalie was protected.
“She has her own lawyer,” Marisol said.
“And the company has been reminded of its obligations regarding retaliation.”
I felt relief for a woman who had risked her career by refusing to approve something she believed was false.
Then Marisol told me something unexpected.
A second former employee had contacted the investigators.
He had been responsible for travel bookings and claimed that Graham sometimes directed him to code personal trips as executive client visits.
He also said several invoices had been split into smaller amounts to avoid additional review.
The investigators would need to verify his account.
I did not know the employee's name.
I did not need to.
The more evidence emerged, the less the story was about me catching my husband with Sienna.
It was about a pattern of decisions that had affected people who never consented to be part of his private life.
That afternoon, my mother called.
She had never liked Graham's habit of correcting me in public, though she had been careful not to interfere.
“Are you coming home after your trip?” she asked.
“Not to the house,” I said.
“I've arranged to stay with Priya until I find an apartment.”
“Come here if you need to.”
“I know, Mom.”
She was quiet for a moment.
“Do you still love him?”
The question surprised me.
I considered it carefully.
“I love who I thought he was,” I said.
“I don't know the person who got on that plane.”
My mother sighed.
“That's a painful difference.”
“It is.”
“Don't confuse pain with a reason to go back.”
I carried those words with me through the rest of the day.
On my final night in Cancún, Sienna sent another message.
I spoke to a lawyer. I'm giving the investigators what I have. I'm sorry I hurt you.
I read it twice.
I wanted to tell her that an apology did not restore a marriage.
I wanted to ask whether she had ever wondered what happened to the woman whose husband she was traveling with.
Instead, I answered honestly.
Thank you for taking responsibility for what you know. I need distance now.
She replied: I understand.
The next morning, I flew back to Dallas as a passenger on a separate flight.
I wore jeans and a white shirt and sat by the window in economy.
No one recognized me.
No one asked me to smile.
For three hours, I watched clouds pass beneath the wing and tried to imagine a life that did not require constant vigilance.
Priya met me at the airport.
She hugged me without asking questions.
Then she took my suitcase and drove us to her apartment.
I slept in her guest room that night with my phone on silent.
The following day, Marisol and I met in her office.
She laid out the divorce petition, a list of jointly owned assets, and a proposed temporary arrangement for the house.
We reviewed everything carefully.
I had brought pay stubs, tax returns, mortgage statements, and records of household expenses.
For the first time, I could see our marriage translated into documents that did not depend on Graham's version of events.
There were numbers showing my contributions.
There were dates showing when accounts had changed.
There were statements proving I had supported a home he repeatedly claimed I had done nothing to build.
“Are you ready?” Marisol asked.
I signed the petition.
“Yes.”
Two days later, Graham's attorney requested a meeting to discuss settlement.
Marisol insisted it take place with counsel present.
We met in a conference room overlooking a busy Dallas street.
Graham arrived wearing the same expensive watch he had adjusted before leaving for his supposed Austin trip.
He looked older than he had on the plane.
His lawyer began by saying everyone wanted to avoid unnecessary conflict.
I agreed.
Then Graham spoke.
“I never meant for you to find out like that.”
I stared at him.
“You mean on the plane?”
He nodded.
“Or at all?”
He looked down.
His lawyer shifted in his seat.
“Elena,” Graham said, “I know I hurt you.”
I waited.
“I made mistakes.”
“Those were decisions,” I said.
“Repeated ones.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“I felt trapped.”
“In our marriage?”
“In expectations. Work. Everything.”
“You were free to tell me you wanted to leave.”
He said nothing.
“You were free to ask for a divorce before starting another relationship.”
He looked toward his attorney.
I kept my voice even.
“But you chose to tell me you were in Austin while you took someone else to Cancún.”
Graham leaned forward.
“Are you doing this because of the investigation?”
“No,” I said.
“I'm divorcing you because I can no longer trust you.”
He seemed startled.
He had spent so much time treating the company inquiry as my revenge that he had forgotten our marriage was broken before the inquiry began.
His lawyer asked whether I intended to make public statements.
“No,” I said.
“I intend to tell the truth when legally required and otherwise get on with my life.”
We discussed the house, retirement accounts, and practical next steps.
Graham offered to buy out my share of the property.
Marisol said we would consider a properly documented valuation.
He tried once more to speak to me alone.
I declined.
As the meeting ended, he said, “I thought you would always be there.”
I looked at him for a long moment.
“I was,” I said.
“You just kept leaving.”
Outside the building, the afternoon sun was bright enough to make me squint.
I stood on the sidewalk and let the noise of traffic wash around me.
For years, Graham had made me feel that every decision required his permission.
I had just made the largest decision of my adult life without asking him.
And the world had not ended.

PART 4 — THE FLIGHT HOME

The investigation lasted four months.
I learned to stop measuring my days by its progress.
At first, every email from Marisol made my heart race.
Then I understood that the company's findings would not decide whether my marriage had been worth saving.
That question was already answered.
I rented a small apartment near a park, close enough to the airport that early check-ins no longer required a long drive.
The first night there, I ate takeout noodles on the floor because my furniture had not arrived.
I laughed when I realized I had no one to criticize the meal or ask why I had spent money on delivery.
The laughter turned into tears.
Then the tears stopped.
Healing did not arrive as a grand revelation.
It arrived in small ordinary permissions.
I bought flowers because I liked them.
I left a book open on the coffee table.
I spent an afternoon with my mother without checking whether Graham needed anything.
I took a weekend trip to Santa Fe with Priya and returned without explaining every hour of my absence.
At work, Denise asked whether I wanted to move permanently away from the Cancún route.
I considered it.
“No,” I said.
“I won't let one bad memory decide where I can go.”
She smiled.
“Good answer.”
One evening, Natalie invited me to coffee.
We met in a quiet bakery after her attorney confirmed there was no reason we couldn't speak socially, provided we avoided confidential investigation details.
She looked tired but relieved.
“I thought I was going to lose my career,” she said.
“I'm sorry you were put in that position.”
She shook her head.
“You didn't put me there.”
We talked about ordinary things after that.
Her new job.
My apartment.
The absurd price of parking near the airport.
As we stood to leave, she said, “For what it's worth, I was glad someone finally asked questions.”
I thanked her.
I did not tell her she had helped me remember how to trust my own judgment.
A month later, the company announced that Graham had resigned following the independent review.
The public statement said the firm had identified violations of its expense and approval policies and had referred certain matters for further assessment.
It did not accuse him of crimes.
It did not mention me.
I was grateful for both things.
The story was no longer mine to manage.
Graham's attorney later acknowledged that he had agreed to repay specific expenses as part of a negotiated separation from the company.
I did not know every detail, and I refused to invent them.
I had spent enough time living among half-truths.
The divorce took longer than I hoped.
We disagreed over the value of the house and the division of some investments.
But we eventually reached a settlement after exchanging financial disclosures through our attorneys.
I received my share of the home equity and retirement assets.
Graham kept the house after refinancing it in his own name.
I kept my airline career, my savings, and the ability to wake up without wondering what lie I would hear before breakfast.
The final hearing took less than half an hour.
I wore a navy suit and carried a small folder containing my identification and the documents Marisol had asked me to bring.
Graham sat on the other side of the courtroom.
He did not look at me until the judge confirmed that the marriage was dissolved.
Then he turned.
For an instant, I saw the man I had married.
Not the executive who talked over me at dinner.
Not the passenger frozen in an aircraft doorway.
Just a tired man who had made choices he could not undo.
“Elena,” he said outside the courtroom.
I stopped, keeping a comfortable distance.
“I'm sorry,” he said.
This time, he did not add an excuse.
I believed that he was sorry.
I also knew that belief did not require reconciliation.
“Thank you for saying it,” I answered.
He swallowed.
“Do you think we'll ever be friends?”
“I don't know,” I said.
“And I don't need to decide today.”
I walked away before he could ask for another promise.
A week later, I received a postcard from Sienna.
There was no return address.
She wrote that she had ended the relationship in Cancún, cooperated with the inquiry, and begun rebuilding her own life.
She apologized again for the part she had played.
I placed the postcard in a drawer.
I didn't need to answer it.
Forgiveness, I was learning, could be a private process rather than a performance for someone else.
By spring, my apartment had become a home.
There were plants in the kitchen window and photographs from my travels on the walls.
I bought a sturdy dining table and invited my mother, Priya, and Denise for dinner.
We burned the garlic bread and laughed until we cried.
No one blamed me.
No one treated a ruined side dish as proof of my character.
I had forgotten how peaceful ordinary imperfection could feel.
A few weeks later, I was assigned as lead flight attendant on another international departure.
I arrived early, reviewed the crew briefing, and checked the forward galley.
The aircraft smelled of fresh coffee and the faint clean scent of a cabin prepared for boarding.
Passengers began arriving with backpacks, briefcases, strollers, and carefully folded boarding passes.
I greeted each one.
“Good morning. Welcome aboard.”
A nervous young woman paused at the door.
“It's my first time flying alone,” she confessed.
I smiled.
“You're going to do fine. Let me show you where your seat is.”
She relaxed enough to smile back.
As she walked down the aisle, I thought about the flight to Cancún.
For months, people who heard a little of the story had asked whether I had planned some spectacular revenge.
They imagined I had deliberately arranged to be on that plane, served Graham a humiliating speech with his champagne, or exposed him over the public-address system.
None of those things happened.
I hadn't known he would be there until he stepped through the door.
And I hadn't needed to humiliate him to tell the truth.
The documents were already in the hands of people authorized to examine them.
The marriage had ended because I finally accepted what his choices meant.
What looked from the outside like a perfect revenge story had actually been a long, quiet decision to stop abandoning myself.
I checked my watch.
Boarding was nearly complete.
Priya joined me in the galley with a fresh pot of coffee.
“Ready?” she asked.
I looked down the aisle at the passengers settling into their seats.
A father was helping his daughter fasten her seat belt.
A couple shared headphones over a movie.
An elderly man was carefully placing a wrapped gift beneath the seat in front of him.
All of them were going somewhere.
So was I.
“Ready,” I said.
The door closed.
We completed our safety checks.
The aircraft pushed back from the gate, and sunlight spilled across the wing.
I fastened my harness and felt the familiar movement of the engines beneath my feet.
For the first time in years, I wasn't waiting for a husband to come home and tell me where he'd been.
I was going somewhere myself.
And this time, I knew exactly who I was bringing with me.
Me.
