The paper did not give me permission to humiliate Eric the way I felt
humiliated.

Years later, Diane came to our new house for Thanksgiving.

I could share a house and still feel respected.

deciding for me, or demanding my obedience, we had the chance to build
something new.
Not everyone should reconcile after disrespect.
Not every apology deserves another chance.
I chose mine slowly, based on changed behavior rather than promises.
That was my decision.
The same way London was my decision.
The same way selling the Colonial was my decision.
The same way opening that fireproof box at 1:14 in the morning was my
decision.
That night, I thought I was preparing to leave a house.
I was actually preparing to stop disappearing inside my own life.
And that was the first move I made that nobody else got to make for me.
